Perception and Behavior of PLWHA towards Out-of-Pocket Costs when Accessing Antiretroviral Treatment

Out-of-pocket costs are defined as direct and indirect when accessing antiretroviral (ARV) treatment at healthcare centers that aren’t subsidized by the government. While ARV can be accessed for free, diagnostic tests, consultation, opportunistic infections main factor behind low number of People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) post-diagnosis. This study aims to understand PLWHA’s behaviors related access based on perceived barriers out-of-pocket costs. used a qualitative approach 8 PLWHA informants 1 worker informant works care, support, (CST) clinic private hospital. was conducted four months from August November 2021. Results found in influenced their seriousness HIV, national insurance referral process, self-efficacy. Perceived cost were not identified informants’ reason deciding start or discontinue treatment. recommends increasing availability clinical psychologists provide psychological support PLWHA, specifically within first 6 diagnosis, supplemented peer groups.
